Nature Power and Spirit Helpers

The web of power is the energy matrix that underlies all life. It is the connector and is the same ‘stuff’ of all matter. It is because of the web of power that we can make contact with other energies and powers of nature. By knowing how this energy network operates, we can tap into its resources. Author and Shaman, Barbara Meiklejohn-Free explains how…

The key to all contact and relationships, whether physical or other, is respect and honour. Friends and loved ones respond to the respect and honour that we accord them. The same is true of the nature and spiritual realms. They respond to the respect that you show them. You may be skeptical at first but that is only because you have not been taught that animals, trees, insects, stones, the weather are reachable. A radical de-processing of Western attitudes and expectations is often required. Other cultures do not correct their children and tell them, ‘No Honey, the tree could not possibly be telling you anything, it is just a tree and they don’t talk.’  The West has been handicapped by such teaching but now we can re-learn. As a lack of our relationship to the spirits of nature, we should not be surprised that it may take some time for them to  ‘warm-up’ to us. Give them some time to trust you and your limitations. After all, they have been treated rather badly by people for a long time. This same idea applies to our own subconscious. We have been out of relationship with our inner aspects for so long, in this externally focused world, that even our own ‘inner  nature’ – our intuition, takes time to come back into a full relationship with us. All these aspects must be able to trust us and that takes us being trustworthy.

The way, or manner and mental attitude, in which we approach these worlds is very important. If we go with a sincere heart and accepting nature, we will have much more success than if we are arrogant, trivialise, fearful or a bit suspicious. The essence or spirit of anything is neither good nor evil; it is energy, like electricity, wind or fire. The sun causes plants to grow and flowers bear fruit; however, too much sun will burn the leaves. It is a matter of the amount of energy and how it is applied. Some spiritual essences can be very errant and mischievous but they are not intrinsically evil. It is more a matter of sorting out why they are disruptive and channelling their energy into more serving ways. Usually you will find that the source of the problem is human disrespect.

You may be wondering why, if we need to show so much respect for nature, is it not a betrayal of this trust to kill an animal for food. The answer to this dilemma from an Earth-centered perspective is that everything is alive from the plants we eat, the air we breathe, the rocks that we use to build shelters, the cotton we weave for clothing. It is in fact an honour to take another life into our body in order to continue life, or to use wood to build our shelter. It is the process and intention of the acts that make them an honouring or not. Creatures and things of this planet are glad to serve people by providing themselves as food, shelter and clothing, if they are asked properly and thanked. Remember that life essence can never be destroyed only physical form is altered. We are what we eat, what we wear and what surrounds us. It is up to us to make that relationship sacred. It is when we take more trees, for instance, than our need and waste much good material out of greed and exploitation that the natural world is abused. People of the old ways have been telling us for a long time that the ecological crises that face the world today are the result of imbalance caused by a lack of respect and ignorance of natural laws. The problem is not the use; it’s the abuse.
