Seeing Stars

By Barbara Meiklejohn-Free

Oh Great Spirit of our Ancestors, I raise my pipe to you, to your messengers the four winds, and to Mother Earth who provides for your children. Give us the wisdom to teach our children to love, to respect and to be kind to each other so that they may grow with peace in mind. Let us learn to share all the good that you provide for us on this Earth.

Our winter night sky is particularly clear during this time. Those who live closer to the North Pole have special light shows, and for others, the night sky might seem tangibly close. Contemplating the Heavens, particularly the North Star, Orion, the Pleiades and the Milky Way during this time can bring us closer to Divine Creative Energy and to the idea that we are, in some way, of the stars.
Most indigenous cultures have much to say about the stars and our relation to them. Hunbatz Men, a contemporary Mayan teacher says, ‘We come from the stars and to the stars we shall return’. The Mayan letter ‘G’ for example, according to Hunbatz is a direct reminder of the spiral nature of our own Milky Way Galaxy and the spiral (G) form of the on-going and ever expanding creation.
In the letter ‘G’ itself, according to the Mayans, is encoded the memory of much of our past and the signs of much of our future relationship to the stars.

The ‘G’ is also symbolic of germination, the Egg-Creator, the seed from which all life springs. For the Mayan, the ‘G’ symbolically represents The Beginning. In many Mayan codices the ‘G’ or spiral form is often shown in the hands of the Lords of Creation. This sacred form is also sculpted on many Mayan pyramids and other pieces of art as a symbol of the heart of all creation. It is in the form of animal eggs, the male testicles, or the female ovaries. There is a wonderful smiling Totonac figure that has a stylised ‘G’ symbol in the middle of its forehead. The Totonacs honoured the ‘G’ because they understood that their people emanated from intergalactic material. They, like the Mayans, used the spiral form to represent the energy of the Milky Way, from which their essence derived.

For the Mayans, the letter ‘G’ represents the essence of energy, the vital or pure essence. The other energy elements are: the physical body or the visible element, the etheric body that is made of more tenuous material and is sometimes experienced as body heat and the mental body or ego that is nourished by psychological energies. Of all these energies, the ‘G’ is at the centre. It is the essence of all things.
As you reflect and meditate on the letter ‘G’, the spiralling Milky Way and other heavenly bodies during this time, know that you are opening up the sacred doors to heavenly connections whose energies will awaken and stimulate your own energy body and memories that, for a long time, have been lying dormant.
