Watkins Wisdom: Interview with Yogi Ashokananda

Raised in India, Yogi Ashokananda began practicing yoga in early childhood, later training with some of the great Indian teachers. Now based in London and India, he travels extensively internationally. He is highly regarded in his field as a true yoga expert, meditation master and speaker on spirituality.  A registered yogisenior teacher with Yoga Alliance UK, Yogi teaches regular classes at the major yoga centres in London and runs retreats, courses, workshops and teacher training around the world, including at the Ashok Tree Ashram, Tiruvannamalai, India.
He currently has two DVDs available: Power Yoga & Kriya Yoga and A.M. (Solar) & P.M. (Lunar) Yoga.

Which books and authors inspired you to get started writing?
Osho, Rabindranath Tagore, Munshi Premchand, Hari Vansh Rai Bachchan
Books: Bhagavad Gita, Gitanjali, Madhu Shala, poetry of India’s ex-prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Dayanand Saraswati and a book called Satyartha Prakash and every piece of literature and story written by Premchand.

What are your goals and intentions as a writer?
Message of health and spiritual self development, finding the inner strength and the message for the unconscious mind to be woken up. Creating an inner revolution, developing the ability to reflect through ones life.

What empowers you in your daily work and life?
Service to humanity, to minimise the suffering of ones life. My daily practice of meditation and yoga and the faith with my inner guidance. Talking to strangers and asking them how are you doing and watching their reactions of anger, laughter, a smile, surprise and so on….Teaching and watching people grow from physical weakness to physical strength, from being scared or fearlessness to gaining a voice, seeing the faith and the trust in ones being re-discovered and re-aligned with ones true nature.

What is your next project?
Writing my Prana Kriya Yoga and Himalayan Hatha Yoga books. My two other philosophy books discussing spirituality and inner alignment.

Is there anything you would say to your readers?
Don’t just read books but try to implement their words and ideas into your daily life otherwise it is just another burden on your intellect unsettling the mind by having too much information and questions but no experience. This book, The Power of Relaxation, is not able words, it is about the experience you can gain out of it so please practice and self observe, develop mindfulness of your practices and your being.
